LOA 5th Grade Students Demonstrate Exceptional Writing Skills in 2010-11

Lake Oconee Academy fifth grade students participated in the Georgia Writing Assessment exam for the 2010-11 school year.  The exam is administered to all fifth graders in the state.  100 % of LOA fifth graders met or exceeded expectations.

The Georgia Writing Assessment is separated into four domains: ideas, organization, style and conventions.  Scoring is divided among these four domains with 40% weighed for ideas and 20% for the other three areas.

On assessment day, the students are given a randomly distributed topic (not selected by the teacher or students) in one of three genres – narrative, expository or persuasive – and expected to write an effective essay.

“We begin preparing our students in the early grades to become competent writers,” said Mrs. Jody Worth, LOA fifth grade teacher.  “By fifth grade, the students are publishing two or three essays per week to master essential writing skills.  I am very proud of their effort and achievement in that every student met or exceeded expectations.”
