Academics

Each day, the Lake Oconee Academy campus is energized by the excitement of students learning. Our dedicated teachers and supportive school community are all focused on the success of each child and their individual educational journey. Student success is the result of a combination of factors including traditional teaching methodologies, incorporation of modern technology, integration of Georgia Standards and the Core Knowledge Curriculum, and well developed year-long plans segmented into challenging daily lessons.

Student success can be exhibited in many ways. Our high quality faculty and staff use formative assessments to keep teachers abreast of student progress from day to day, and week to week. Summative assessments (state developed, teacher developed, and computer generated) are used to chronicle short and long term retention as well as ensure student academic growth is meeting expectations. Our teachers appreciate the stages of a child’s growth and recognize that each student develops at a unique pace, yet our expectations for achievement are high. Consequently, our curriculum allows students to explore, and their mistakes are viewed as part of the learning process and as an important building block in their development.

As a Georgia public charter school, Lake Oconee Academy is required to administer all applicable tests from the Georgia State Criterion-Reference Comprehensive Testing program (CRCT). Also, each year Lake Oconee Academy administers the Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS). This test allows parents to compare the performance of their child(ren) with that of other students across the nation. It also allows Lake Oconee Academy to compare the collective performance of our school’s students to that of other schools’ students.

LOA is one of the highest performing schools in Georgia. LOA has had 100 percent of students meet or exceed expectations on state CRCT tests since 2007.  In 2010, LOA was one of only three schools out of over 1,240 schools in Georgia that had every first, second and third grade student meet or exceed standards in reading, language arts, mathematics, social studies, and science.

Below you will find CRCT results for the 2008-09 first and second grade students (K students do not encounter CRCT testing). You will note that ALL students met or exceeded Georgia Standards.

Lake Oconee Academy was honored to receive the 2010 Platinum Award for Highest Percentage of Students Meeting or Exceeding Standards from the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement in the Single Statewide System Accountability (SSAS).  LOA previously received a Bronze Award (2008) and a Gold Award (2009) due to being a first- and second-year school, despite achieving Platinum status each year.

Results of this year's ITBS scores are in and LOA students recorded another strong performance.  LOA performed above 90% of the schools in the nation taking the ITBS test in reading, language arts and mathematics.  A summary of the national school percentiles is below.
