student with dog

Every Wednesday at Lake Oconee Academy, something special happens on campus. Student smiles grow a little wider and books open with a new sense of excitement as students gather for one of LOA’s most beloved weekly traditions: Reading Paws!

Through this heartwarming program, for elementary students are invited to practice their reading skills alongside some very patient and encouraging listeners. Therapy dogs Kady, Abbey and HopeJoy curl up beside students as they read aloud, creating a calm and supportive environment where young readers can build confidence at their own pace.

For many students, reading to a dog feels different than reading to an adult or in front of fellow classmates. There is no pressure, no fear of making a mistake, and no rush. Just a book and a furry friend who is happy to listen. That simple combination has a powerful impact.

“Programs like Reading Paws help students associate reading with comfort and joy,” shared Erica Seybert, LOA Elementary School Counselor. “You can see their confidence grow each week as they become more relaxed and engaged with their stories.”

Reading Paws is made possible through the dedication of the program’s incredible therapy dog team. Handlers Merilee Kelly, Steve and Ginny Spurlock, and Hollie Helpler generously volunteer their time each week, bringing not only their dogs but also warmth, patience and encouragement into the classroom. Together with their canine companions, they help create an experience that supports both academic growth and emotional well-being.

Beyond improving reading fluency, Reading Paws encourages a love of books and helps students develop positive associations with learning. For some children, it is the highlight of their week. For others, it becomes a quiet moment of calm in a busy school day.

At Lake Oconee Academy, programs like Reading Paws reflect the school’s commitment to educating the whole child. By blending academics with compassion, connection and creativity, LOA continues to foster an environment where students feel supported, confident and excited to learn.

LOA is deeply grateful to the Reading Paws team who make Wednesdays a little brighter and reading a little sweeter. These gentle dogs and their handlers truly are some of our best reading buddies.
