Lake Oconee Academy students proudly participated in this year’s Exceptional Children’s Day celebration, joining peers from across Greene County for a day filled with energy, encouragement, and meaningful connection.
Held at Greene County High School’s Stadium, the event brought together students of all abilities to take part in a variety of activities, including track and field events, games, and sensory experiences. More than a competition, the day was a celebration of perseverance, belonging, and the unique strengths of every student.
LOA was well represented not only by student participants, but also by a dedicated group of student volunteers who played an important role in supporting the event. From cheering on athletes and assisting with activities to offering encouragement, LOA students demonstrated what it means to lead with compassion and serve their community.
“This day is so meaningful for our students,” said Mattie Raynor, LOA School Special Education teacher. “It gives them the opportunity to be celebrated, to participate, and to feel a true sense of belonging. Watching their confidence grow throughout the day is something really special.”
The experience also provided valuable opportunities for LOA student volunteers, who stepped outside the classroom and into a real-world setting, learning the importance of inclusion, empathy, and encouragement through interaction with their peers.
“It’s always such a rewarding experience,” said Auriana Thornton, a 10th-grade student and two-time volunteer. “Getting to support the athletes, cheer them on, and just be a part of their day meant a lot to me. It really showed me how important it is to show up for others. I run the Teddy Bear Toss station, and it’s so much fun!”
Throughout the day, the stadium was filled with smiles, laughter, and moments of triumph, whether crossing a finish line, participating in a game, or simply being cheered on by friends. For many LOA students, both participants and volunteers, the event was a meaningful and memorable experience that highlighted the power of showing up for others.
Lake Oconee Academy is proud of all Titan students who participated in Exceptional Children’s Day, continuing to model the values of citizenship, service, and community that define the Titan spirit.
