This recent school year, elementary students at Lake Oconee Academy participated in the new Titan Buddies program, an initiative designed to foster meaningful relationships, encourage leadership, and strengthen the sense of community that makes LOA so special.

As part of the school's improvement plan, every student in PreK through fourth grade was paired with a Titan Buddy from another grade level. Throughout the year, buddy pairs met regularly to read together, complete seasonal activities, work on projects, and spend time getting to know one another.

The program paired PreK students with third graders, kindergarten students with second graders, and first graders with fourth graders, creating opportunities for both younger and older students to learn from one another.

"Our Titan Buddies program is rooted in a simple but powerful goal: building meaningful connections while developing strong character in our students," said Elementary Principal Katelyn Mellow. "These partnerships create opportunities for students to learn from one another, lead with kindness, and feel a deeper sense of belonging within our school community."

What made the program especially meaningful was its versatility. Some buddies read books together, while others completed scavenger hunts, worked on seasonal crafts, shared classroom projects, or taught each other new skills. Although the activities varied throughout the year, the outcome remained the same: students formed genuine friendships across grade levels.

"What makes Titan Buddies so special is its flexibility," Mellow said. "Students might read together, create seasonal crafts, share projects, or even teach each other new skills. The possibilities are endless, and that creativity allows relationships to grow in authentic and lasting ways."

For many students, the highlight was simply spending time with their buddy.

"I liked getting to hang out with my new PreK buddy," said third grader Camden Jeffords. "I love reading, so it was really fun getting to read to someone younger than me and help him learn. I also really enjoyed spending time with him and talking about all of our favorite things to do."

The Titan Buddies program reflects Lake Oconee Academy's commitment to creating a school environment where every student feels known, valued, and connected. By bringing elementary students together across grade levels, LOA is helping build a culture of kindness, mentorship, and belonging that extends throughout the entire school community.

With the inaugural year of Titan Buddies complete, the friendships formed and memories created made a lasting impact, proving that some of the most meaningful lessons happen when students take the time to simply connect with one another.
