What began as a commitment to learning over the summer ended with cheers echoing through the Titan Center and elementary cafeteria.

Lake Oconee Academy recently recognized eight middle school students for their academic growth and engagement through the IXL learning platform during the summer months. As a reward for their dedication, each student earned the opportunity to “pie” a teacher during lunch, creating a memorable celebration that had classmates chanting, cheering, and eagerly watching every moment.

While the celebration was filled with laughter, its purpose was much deeper. The event honored students who chose to continue strengthening their academic skills even over the summer break, demonstrating responsibility and a commitment to personal growth.

“One of the best parts of my job is celebrating students who put in the effort to grow,” said Carina Baxley, Middle School Principal at LOA. “These students chose to keep learning over the summer, and that deserves to be recognized. We also have an incredible group of teachers who are willing to do just about anything to encourage and celebrate our students. Moments like this remind us that learning can be both meaningful and fun.”

Faculty members volunteered to participate, proving that supporting students sometimes means being willing to laugh at yourself in the name of learning. Their willingness to step into the spotlight demonstrated the strong relationships that make LOA a place where students are encouraged, challenged, and celebrated.

For sixth-grade student Hutton Wilcher, the recognition made all the extra effort worthwhile. “I worked really hard on IXL over the summer, so it felt awesome to be recognized,” Hutton said. “The shaving cream was so fun, but then I left a little nervous when I remembered I did have to see my teacher next block.”

At LOA, academic achievement is about more than grades or test scores. It is about recognizing growth, encouraging perseverance, and creating experiences that inspire students to become lifelong learners.

Whether through a challenging lesson, an encouraging teacher, or even a face full of pie, Lake Oconee Academy continues to find meaningful ways to recognize student success while building a culture where learning is celebrated and every achievement matters.
