On January 14, Lake Oconee Academy’s DECA students traveled to the University of Georgia for an immersive day of learning, campus exploration and career inspiration. Organized by DECA Advisor and Work-Based Learning Coordinator Kati Mize, the trip gave students a firsthand look at business education, entrepreneurship and college life at the University of Georgia.
The day began at UGA’s Entrepreneurship Program at Studio 225, where students learned about innovation pathways, startup resources and the many opportunities available to students interested in launching business ideas or pursuing entrepreneurial careers.
Students then enjoyed lunch in downtown Athens before meeting members of UGA’s Arch Society, who guided them on a walking tour of North and West Campus. The tour concluded at the Tate Student Center, giving students a deeper understanding of campus life, student involvement and the traditions that define UGA.
Next, the group visited the Terry College of Business, where Terry Student Ambassadors led a tour and shared insights into business majors, career pathways, experiential learning programs and the academic expectations for business students. LOA students gained valuable perspective on how high school preparation connects to collegiate success in business and leadership fields.
One of the most meaningful moments of the trip came when students met with LOA alumni and current UGA students, Ella Blythe, Bhumi Sukha and Anika Imhof, as well as Ava Shurling, a current dual enrollment student. The alumni shared honest advice about college admissions, choosing a major, managing coursework and how their time at LOA prepared them for academic and personal success.
To wrap up the day, students attended the UGA Men’s Basketball game against Ole Miss, adding an exciting taste of campus spirit and college athletics to their visit!
“This trip gave our students a real-world look at business careers, college expectations and the opportunities available to them after high school,” said Kati Mize. “From entrepreneurship and business programs to hearing directly from LOA alumni, it was an incredibly meaningful and motivating experience.”
Experiences like this reflect LOA’s commitment to preparing students for college, careers and life beyond the classroom by connecting them with universities, alumni and hands-on learning opportunities.
