Lake Oconee Academy DECA members traveled to Atlanta on February 4th to participate in Career Technical Student Organization (CTSO) Day hosted at the Capitol, joining more than 2,500 students and advisors from across Georgia.
The annual event brings together student leaders representing CTSOs statewide to highlight the impact of Career, Technical and Agricultural Education (CTAE) programs. Throughout the day, students toured the Georgia State Capitol, observed legislative sessions, and gained insight into the legislative and judicial processes that shape policy across the state.
For LOA students, the experience provided more than just a visit to the Capitol. It offered a meaningful opportunity to see how government and career-focused education intersect. Alley McCullough, an 11th grade DECA member, revealed the impact of the experience. “Attending CTSO Legislative Day at the Capitol offered a unique opportunity to see how government and career-focused education intersect,” McCullough shared. “The most meaningful part of the day for me was seeing nearly 4,000 students and advisors from CTSO organizations come together to meet with representatives and show appreciation for their support.”
CTSO Day is designed to emphasize the value of CTAE programs and student organizations such as DECA, which prepare students for leadership roles in business, marketing, and entrepreneurship. By participating in events like this, students not only develop professional skills but also learn how public policy supports workforce development across Georgia.
LOA students were accompanied by Kati Mize, Work-Based Learning Coordinator, Business and Marketing Education Teacher, and DECA Advisor. Mize shared that opportunities like CTSO Day allow students to connect classroom learning to real-world systems and leadership experiences beyond campus.
“Having the opportunity to represent LOA’s DECA club in such an important setting was truly an honor,” McCullough added. “Witnessing our government in action during the live press conference was not only educational, but inspiring. We also had the chance to meet individuals we would not normally have the opportunity to connect with, building relationships with people from all different backgrounds and walks of life.” Reflecting on the day, McCullough remembered, “My biggest takeaway from this event is that success isn’t out of reach for those who work with purpose and passion.”
Lake Oconee Academy is proud of its DECA members for representing the school with professionalism and enthusiasm while gaining firsthand exposure to the civic processes that impact their futures.
