On February 23, students in Mrs. Katherine Nolley’s junior/senior Forensic Science classes at Lake Oconee Academy welcomed a special guest speaker as part of their Toxicology unit. Sergeant Leo Serria of the Greene County Sheriff’s Office visited campus to provide students with a firsthand look at how toxicology science intersects with real-world law enforcement.
During his presentation, Sergeant Serria spoke candidly about the realities officers face in Greene County and across Georgia. Topics included interstate criminal activity, underage drinking laws, illegal drug possession, firearm violations, human trafficking, credit card theft, and felony charges. Students gained valuable insight into how drug-related crimes are investigated and prosecuted, as well as how serious Georgia’s laws are regarding underage drinking and controlled substances.
As a K-9 handler, Sergeant Serria also introduced students to his four-year-old, four-legged partner, Kai. He shared how highly trained and intelligent Kai is, explaining how the dog plays a critical role in drug detection and criminal investigations. Students learned how K-9 units assist officers in intercepting illegal substances and the level of discipline and trust required between a handler and its dog.
The visit directly connected to the class’s Toxicology unit, where students are studying poisons, drugs, alcohol, chemical compounds, overdose cases, and the laws surrounding controlled substances. Sergeant Serria discussed drug-related deaths, the dangers of handling narcotics, and the growing impact of fentanyl. He explained how dangerous and unpredictable synthetic drugs can be, including how fentanyl is often mixed with highly toxic substances.
Students received a powerful education on the consequences of drug possession, addiction, and misuse, as well as the serious health risks that can occur even from accidental exposure. The presentation reinforced how toxicology science is used in real investigations, from identifying substances to understanding overdose cases and determining cause of death.
One student stated afterward that the experience strengthened her interest in pursuing a career in law enforcement, noting that hearing directly from an officer made the profession feel both meaningful and impactful.
Mrs. Nolley shared that bringing professionals into the classroom allows students to see how science applies beyond textbooks. “When students hear directly from someone working in the field, the content becomes real. It impacts lives every day.”
Sergeant Serria left students with a clear and direct message: Do not use drugs, do not experiment, and never drink and drive. The consequences are serious, permanent, and often life- altering. His presentation underscored the reality that prevention and informed choices are critical to protecting both individual lives and the broader community.
Lake Oconee Academy extends its sincere appreciation to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office for their continued partnership and willingness to invest in students through meaningful, real-world educational experiences. The experience left students with a deeper respect for local law enforcement and a clearer understanding of how science, law, and public safety work together to protect communities.
By connecting classroom learning to real-world application, Lake Oconee Academy continues to provide impactful, career-focused opportunities that prepare students for both higher education and responsible citizenship
