On February 10, Lake Oconee Academy students stepped outside the classroom and into the professional world as part of National Job Shadow Day 2026. A total of 38 students in grades 10 through 12 spent the day shadowing local professionals across Greene County and beyond, gaining invaluable, real-world insight into potential career paths.
Job Shadow Day is designed to help students connect academic learning to meaningful career exploration. LOA Work-Based Learning Coordinator and Business Education Teacher Jennifer Blythe shared “Job Shadow Day gives students the opportunity to see firsthand what a career truly looks like beyond the textbook. When students step into a workplace, ask questions, and observe professionals in action, it helps them begin to picture themselves in those roles and better understand the skills and preparation required.”
Students explored an impressive range of industries, including law, healthcare, marketing, veterinary science, real estate, construction management, fire services, law enforcement, hospitality, education, cosmetology, entrepreneurship, and more. Local businesses and organizations generously opened their doors, offering students a candid look at workplace expectations, daily responsibilities, and long-term career pathways.
Brooks Dellinger, a tenth-grade student who shadowed at Durham Veterinary Clinic, described the experience as eye-opening. “I really enjoyed Job Shadow Day and am considering getting a job there this summer,” Dellinger said. “I got to see so much up close. If there had been parts I didn’t like, it might have changed how I felt about pursuing it, but I actually enjoyed it a lot.”
At Luxury Lake Oconee Real Estate Group, tenth grader Leighton Seybt received an in-depth look at the real estate profession, from licensing steps to the inner workings of the MLS and brokerage operations. She even visited an active listing and met with broker Ted Baker to learn more about client representation and the responsibilities of a brokerage.
Throughout the day, students gained more than just exposure to careers. They developed a deeper understanding of professionalism, communication, and the importance of community relationships. For many, the experience sparked new ideas about future internships, summer employment, and long-term goals.
Lake Oconee Academy extends its sincere gratitude to the many community partners who invested their time and expertise into mentoring students. Their willingness to share knowledge and open their workplaces reflects the strength of the Greene County community and its commitment to developing the next generation of leaders.
Through opportunities like Job Shadow Day, LOA continues to prepare students not only for graduation, but for confident and purposeful entry into the workforce and beyond.
