Lake Oconee Academy inaugural DECA members traveled to Atlanta to compete in the Georgia DECA State Career Development Conference, held February 26–28 at the Hyatt Regency Atlanta.
LOA students joined more than 4,500 students and advisors from across Georgia to showcase their business knowledge and career readiness skills through competitive events, leadership workshops and networking opportunities.
Throughout the three-day conference, students participated in events designed to simulate real-world business scenarios. These competitions challenge students to demonstrate problem-solving abilities, professionalism and communication skills through activities such as business role-play competitions, comprehensive business exams, and formal research presentations.
Senior Libby Hopkins delivered an outstanding performance, earning 6th place in the Buying and Merchandising Operations Research event. For this project, Libby partnered with a local business to conduct in-depth research on the company’s buying and merchandising practices related to a specific business challenge. She developed a comprehensive research paper outlining her findings and recommendations and presented her work during a formal 15-minute presentation to a judge.
Reflecting on the experience, Hopkins shared that preparing for the event required consistent dedication. “From October through February, I spent months collecting research, analyzing data, and designing both my paper and presentation,” Hopkins said. “Since this was LOA’s first year with a DECA chapter, there wasn’t really a precedent to follow. I just focused on doing my best and presenting my work with confidence and pride.”
Hopkins added that the convention provided opportunities far beyond the competition itself. “The convention was so much more than presenting and attending award ceremonies,” she said. “I had the opportunity to develop professional skills like public speaking, thinking on my feet, and performing under pressure. I also connected with other students and professionals who share my interests, which will help me as I continue toward college and my career.”
Her strong performance earned her a spot to advance to DECA’s International Career Development Conference, which will be held in Atlanta this April.
In addition to individual success, Lake Oconee Academy DECA was recognized for its chapter excellence, earning 1st Place in the Mile Campaign Membership Award. This honor recognizes outstanding achievement in chapter membership growth and engagement, reflecting the dedication of LOA’s inaugural DECA chapter.
Participation in the State Career Development Conference allows students to apply classroom learning in competitive environments while developing leadership, collaboration and career readiness skills. As Lake Oconee Academy DECA continues to grow, it is quickly establishing itself as a strong presence at the state level, representing both the school and the Greene County community with pride.
