On March 18, Lake Oconee Academy students joined schools across Georgia in a statewide Day of Service initiative, inspired by Georgia’s Teacher of the Year, Rachel Kinsaul, and her platform centered on community connection.
The Day of Service encouraged students to look beyond the classroom and find meaningful ways to serve others, a mission that closely aligns with LOA’s core values of Community, Citizenship, and Scholarship.
Throughout the day, students across multiple grade levels participated in a variety of service projects designed to support their school and one another.
Younger students wrote letters of encouragement and appreciation to faculty and staff, recognizing the individuals who make a difference in their daily lives. Others brightened the front office by cutting and arranging flowers for school receptionists, creating a warm and welcoming environment for visitors.
Students also focused on beautifying their campus. Kindergarten classes planted wildflowers, while second and third grade students took part in a campuswide clean-up effort, working together to care for the spaces they use each day. “I picked my spot and planted my flowers. I can’t wait to see them grow!” shared an excited kindergarten student.
In a meaningful act of service behind the scenes, sixth grade students volunteered with Coach Seymour in the cafeteria, assisting our custodial staff with cleaning and resetting the space after elementary lunches.
The Day of Service provided students with hands-on opportunities to practice empathy, teamwork and responsibility, reinforcing the importance of giving back to their community. “At LOA, we believe learning extends far beyond just academics,” Lower School Counselor Erica Seybert explained. “Experiences like this help shape students into thoughtful, engaged citizens who understand the value of serving others.”
By participating in this statewide initiative, Lake Oconee Academy continues to live out its mission of educating students not only for success in the classroom, but also for meaningful impact in the communities where they live, work and play.
