Jack Miller Inspires His Community at Back-to-School 5K for Parkinson’s Disease

On Sunday, August 3rd, Lake Oconee Academy proudly hosted the Back-to-School 5K Run/Walk for Parkinson’s. Organized by LOA alum, Jack Miller. This meaningful event commemorated Jack’s father, Brock Miller, who passed away from Parkinson’s disease. It also brought together community members of all ages to support this important cause.

"The race was a huge success, and I’m incredibly grateful to all the runners, volunteers, and sponsors who made it possible,” said Jack. “I am thrilled that we raised over $6,000 for the Parkinson’s Foundation. I would like to give a special thank you to Carole Black and Classic Race Services for organizing such a smooth race day and to LOA for allowing us to host.”

Despite the cloudy weather, everyone’s spirits remained high as LOA students, alumni, families and community supporters enthusiastically participated, united by their desire to make a positive impact. The event combined competitive runners striving for personal bests with families and friends enjoying a casual walk, creating an atmosphere filled with warmth and shared purpose.

Jack also said he was “deeply thankful to my family and friends for their encouragement, and to Grace Stephens, whose dedication and behind-the-scenes efforts were essential to making this event happen. It was truly inspiring to see the Greensboro/Lake Oconee community come together in support of a cause so close to my heart."

LOA Cross Country Coach, Carina Baxley, shared her pride in Jack and the team and said, “Jack has always been driven as a standout runner and former school record holder for LOA’s cross country team. Now he's channeling that same determination into something deeply meaningful. His commitment to honoring his late father by raising awareness and funds for Parkinson’s, all while training for the New York City Marathon, is truly inspiring,"When asked about getting the entire LOA Cross Country involved in the event, Coach Baxley added, "It was especially awesome to see our current cross country runners out there participating and supporting the cause. It’s a powerful reminder of how the program continues to grow and transcend generations. There’s a consistent sense of purpose, community, and pride among these athletes.”

Adding to the day’s success, eighth-grader Nathan Mayer, who proudly finished first, shared, "I loved running with my team and family for a good cause. It made me feel great and got me to push myself. My favorite part was finishing first and running well.”

Overall ,the 5K event was a tremendous success, with an impressive turnout that spoke volumes about the strength of our community and Jack’s leadership. Jack’s inspiring efforts continue beyond this event, as he now prepares to run the prestigious New York City Marathon this November as part of the Parkinson’s Foundation fundraising team.

Lake Oconee Academy celebrates Jack’s inspiring leadership and thanks everyone who participated, donated, and volunteered, making the event an overwhelming success. All proceeds from the event directly benefit the Parkinson’s Foundation, supporting ongoing research, advocacy, and resources for individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease.
