Lake Oconee Academy is proud to announce that Lillian Garcia-Carreras, eleventh grader, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP).
The Governor’s Honors Program is a highly competitive, four-week summer residential program that brings together some of the most academically and artistically talented high school students from across the state. Participants engage in advanced, college-level instruction in a variety of disciplines while learning alongside peers who share their passion and dedication.
Distinguishing herself amongst thousands of applicants statewide, Lillians was selected as a finalist in her chosen area of theatre, an impressive achievement that highlights her talent and commitment to the arts. “I am so honored to be selected as a GHP finalist,” Lillian shared. “I’m incredibly excited for this opportunity because theatre has been a part of my life ever since I can remember. I grew up painting sets with my mom and singing the songs from whatever show my siblings were in. I’m truly grateful to have been accepted into this highly exclusive program, and I can’t wait to work with people my age who share my passion for theatre.”
Ms. Laura Brennan, LOA theater teacher who nominated Lillian, emphasized the significance of this achievement “Lillian is just a beacon of light,” shared Ms. Brennan. “I am incredibly proud of her and the hard work she has put into her craft.”
Dr. Brad Bowling, CEO of Lake Oconee Academy, also expressed his pride in Lillian’s accomplishment. “We are beyond proud of Lillian and this outstanding achievement,” said Dr. Bowling. “Being selected for the Governor’s Honors Program reflects not only her talent, but also her dedication, creativity and willingness to pursue excellence. She represents the very best of LOA.”
Mrs. Caroline St. John, regional coordinator for the program and LOA teacher, highlighted the competitive nature of the selection process. “Lillian will spend four weeks this summer learning alongside some of the most outstanding high school students across Georgia,” Mrs. St. John explained. Out of approximately 4,500 students nominated and applying, only 400 to 500 are selected. Lillian is one of just 24 theatre students chosen as a finalist. We are thrilled for her!”
Lake Oconee Academy also celebrates Jameson Lackey, a tenth grade student who was selected as an alternate in mathematics, further reflecting the strength and academic excellence of LOA students across disciplines.
This summer, Lillian will join fellow state finalists for an immersive educational experience that fosters both artistic growth and academic excellence. Her selection reflects the strength of Lake Oconee Academy’s Fine Arts program and its commitment to nurturing student talent and passion.
