Students in Lake Oconee Academy’s life skills and community-based instruction program are gaining valuable real-world experience while making a meaningful impact in the local community through their partnership with the Lake Oconee Humane Society.
Throughout the school year, students have visited the humane society to participate in a variety of hands-on service projects that support both the organization and the animals in its care. Activities have included making dog treats, cleaning and organizing pet toys, assembling adoption kits for new pet owners, and helping prepare items used throughout the shelter.
The experience has provided students with opportunities to strengthen practical life and workplace skills in a work setting while also building confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and communication.
“Our students absolutely love going to the humane society,” said LOA Student Support Services teacher Sheryl Harris. “Not only are they learning important life and job skills, but they are also experiencing the joy that comes from helping others. They feel proud knowing their work is making a difference for the animals and families in our community.”
Staff members at the Lake Oconee Humane Society have also enjoyed welcoming LOA students and watching them engage so enthusiastically in the work. “The students from LOA were very helpful with making treats, doing laundry, and helping to bag dry cat and dog food. They showered the cats and dogs with attention and love which is instrumental in getting these animals to relate to many people. I hope to have them back next year!” shared Kristen Loeb.
For many students, the experience has become a highlight of their school year. “My favorite part was holding the dogs,” one student shared. “I liked helping the animals, holding the dogs and cats, and making them happy” another student reflected.
The partnership reflects Lake Oconee Academy’s commitment to creating meaningful learning experiences that extend beyond the classroom and prepare students for life in their community. Through opportunities like these, students are able to apply classroom learning in authentic environments while developing skills that will serve them far into the future.
